Relationship with Shug

  1. What did everyone think of the relationship between Celie and Shug? I know that it is a sensitive area all around, but I think that we can talk about it, and should in a Christian school setting. I was fascinated to find out how innocent it was. It need not be such an awkward, nail biter situation.

In Celie’s circumstances, it is very logical that she should find such comfort in women. No man had shown her any love, affection or even humanity, not even her own “pa”. She was forced into an abusive relationship with a man who wanted her sister and then openly wanted another woman. And then tortured her by holding back her sister’s letters from her. Nettie was the only one that she was close too and she was stripped away from her by a man.

It is no wonder then she didn’t want to write to God because He is likened to a man. “Anyhow, I say, the God I been praying and writing to is a man. And act just like all the other mans I know. Trifling, forgetful and lowdown” (192).

So when Shug allows Celie to open up about her abuse, shame and feelings, it is truly significant. And then Shug begins to love Celie, show her affection and warmth. Just looking at how Celie was nurtured in her upbringing shows a lot about their relationship.

Once again, this relationship need not be such a hand ringer for people who are afraid to step on toes, but one that we can approach and understand. What do you guys think?

  2. I completely agree. I do not believe that the relationship between Celie and Shug was "perverted". Celie did not have the mentality to be naturally attracted to a women and commit sexual acts with a woman on purpose. Her circumstances in life made her fear men, and she viewed Shug and women as her comfort zone. The women in her life such as Nettie and Shug showed love and care towards her. Every women desires love and care from a man.Since she never saw that from her husband, her view of love between a man and a woman was distorted.
