Movie Version

  1. Do you think the Spielberg movie version of the book was a good adaption? I did. Some of us watched it together and there were some powerful scenes, like when Mr._____ takes Nettie away from Celie. Celie and Nettie are clinging onto one another, crying and screaming, as he tears them apart and kicks Nettie onto the road. I mean it was intense. And I thought that all of the actors and actresses were well cast and did fine.

There were a couple of differences. One is that Shug’s father is the preacher in the movie, when there isn’t a sign that they are related in the book. It just says that he preached against her on page 43. They make it a significant part in the movie, though, and it all comes to an emotional head at the end.

Also, Spielberg put certain scenes along side of each other for symbolism, which would not have been done in the book because the scenes were not in that order. For example, after Celie finds out that Mr._____ has been keeping Nettie’s letters from her, she almost slits his throat with his shaving knife. At the same time, it is showing the two children in Africa who are about to be cut ceremoniously, to be part of the tribe. It is really powerful and interesting.

Spielberg’s name attached to the movie, however, gave it horrible reviews for some reason. Before it even came out, it was labeled controversial. I think it’s because Spielberg had been doing all of these really good blockbusters before then, like Jaws, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park and so forth, and people didn’t think he could tackle such a sensitive book. He was white and male. But people also ridiculed his Schindler’s List movie, which was amazing. The Color Purple received Academy awards so not everyone hated it, I guess. I think his name is something that will always have mixed reviews, and The Color Purple just got caught in the cross-fire.

    What do you guys think?
