Relationship with Jack

  1. What do you guys think of Celie’s view of Jack, Odessa’s husband. Besides the descriptions of Nettie’s husband, the missionary, Jack is the only other character that is described by Celie as initially kind. He didn’t have to go through a transformation like Mr. ______ or Harpo did. I think that he made a really big impression on Celie and he was the first man she might have ever been attracted to.

First, he was the one who initially helped her start her pants business. On page 212, it says, “ Shug fingered the pieces of cloth…all soft, flowing, rich and catch the light. This a far cry from that stiff army crap us started with, she say. You ought to make up a special pair to thank and show Jack.” I think this implies that he sent her the really nice fabric. It also suggests that Shug was teasing her about him, like she knew Celie had a soft spot for him, because after that line, Celie responds, “What she say that for.”

Most of page 213 is Celie thinking about all the characteristics of Jack and how she would make a pair of pants that mirrors him. It never shows her doing this much thinking about anyone else’s pants. “Jack is tall and kind and don’t hardly say anything. Love children. Respect his wife Odessa…then I remember one time he touch me. And if felt like his fingers had eyes. Felt like he knew me all over, but he just touch my arm up near the shoulder.” Now why would such an innocent touch affect Celie so powerfully?

Also, she earlier describes men like frogs, but she daydreams about Jack and Odessa being romantic. “And they have to be something he can lay back in when he holds Odessa in front of the fire. And…I dream and dream over Jack’s pants (213).

  2. Celie did not experience any type of affection. Therefore, she had nothing but adoration for Jack and viewed Odessa as being a lucky woman. The one innocent touch that Jack save Celie was impacting to her, because she had not experienced such a thing.I think it would be normal for Celie to have developed such emotion given the type of life she had.
