Pants

  1. Do you think it is interesting that Celie made pants for a living? Does anyone else think that is significant? In the books it always shows Celie making, or sewing something. Celie and Sophie worked on a quilt together for a while. “Let’s make quilt pieces out of those messed up curtains, she say. And I run git my pattern book” (42).

Celie started to make pants when Shug suggested it. Celie wanted to kill Mr.______ because he hid Nettie’s letters, and Shug wanted Celie to do something to take her mind off the hate. But it didn’t come natural to Celie. “What I need pants for? I say. I aint no man” (146). Shug countered that it was ridiculous to wear a dress. “You do all the work around here. It’s a scandless, the way you look out there plowing in a dress….and one more thing, I used to put on Albert’s pants when we was courting. And he one time put on my dress” (147). It’s interesting how gender roles get flipped on its head in this sentence. And once Celie starts making pants, she can’t stop.

Do you think the pants area symbol that Celie is becoming more confident, more independent? She can take charge of her own life without needing a man?

I think this is shown again in the scene where Celie is leaving Mr._____ “’Well, say Grady, trying to bring light. A woman can’t git a man if peoples talk.’ Shug look at me and us giggle. Then us laugh sure nuff. Then Squeak start to laugh. Then Sophia. All us laugh and laugh” (201). All the women laugh because they all know that marriage isn’t the end all be all. They don’t need a man, and some of them are far better off without a man. What do you think?

  2. i definitely believe that the pants were a huge symbol of her independence in the book. for one reason pants back then were considered manly and many women didnt wear them. this once again shows that Celie is breakin off from Mr. and becoming her own woman. i also think its a breaking away from shug too. she isnt leanin on her to pay for anything and she is breaking away from being under anyone. i really think its interesting to see that these woman register that its okay to be without a man and they are far better off without one, yet many of them are tied somehow to one.
