Relationship with Mr.______

1 comment:

  1. I think the relationship between and Mr.______ is really interesting. I mean, it starts off horrible enough. He wants her sister and not her, but marries her only to have her slave around the house. He physically abuses her, and then sends Nettie away because he can’t have her. Openly loves another woman, and constantly puts Celie down. Hid her sister’s letters from her and raises his children to disrespect her.

He just sounds plain insidious, and was in fact, but we begin to see that like Celie, he is also a product of his environment. We see this when his dad comes to visit on page 53. He is the one who made Albert not marry Shug and teach him how to beat women to keep them in line.

After Celie leaves and Mr.______ learns how to do things of himself, he begins to realize what he has lost and ponder at why he is the way he is. He begins to change and become someone that Celie can really confide in. “I mean when you talk to him now he really listen, and one time, out of nowhere in the conversation us was having, he said Celie, I’m satisfied this the first time I ever lived on earth as a natural man. It feel like a new experience” (260). This is also around the same time that Celie starts using his name, Albert.

I like that in the end they are not enemies or lovers, but simply friends, confidants, companions. What do you guys think?
